I get A LOT of questions regarding what to wear for a photo session. Here are a few suggestions:
1. Think C.O.L.O.R. Saturated colors (green, blue, red, purple, orange, yellow) really pop in your photos. I don’t recommend white — it just doesn’t do much for most people. When trying to put together outfits for larger groups: coordinate, don’t match. It was a big trend in the 1990s to match everyone in khaki and white or jeans and white. That trend is dead, I’m sorry to report. Stay away from pastels…they are like white. Feel free to mix and match stripes, plaid, etc. Pick 3-4 colors and mix them all in.
2. Layer: Layering provides a lot of interest and makes it easy to remove an article of clothing and have a totally different look. Hats, scarves, jackets, boots, etc. Bring it on!
3. Some great websites to check out for the latest and greatest are: JCrew, Boden, mini Boden, Gap, Old Navy. There’s no need to spend a fortune on your clothing. Find some great ideas and then go to Target — they have great knock off stuff at a reasonable price.
4. Comfort: This is for the kids (and possibly the men), especially. If they aren’t happy about what they are wearing or they aren’t comfortable, it gets the whole experience off on the wrong foot. They will be running, jumping, rolling around, maybe even getting wet…so dress them accordingly.
5. Babies: Newborns look best nude or in a simple onesie/diaper cover. No need to bring on a wardrobe for these little muffins. Etsy has some adorable headbands, hats, etc. I’d be happy to recommend a store — just ask.
