My husband and I escaped to Portland, Oregon, last week (thanks mom!). Well…actually I escaped. Brandon was there on business. (Yay me…boo him.)
I have lived in a lot of places and traveled to even more…and Portland has managed to worm itself into my heart as one of my favorite cities, even though I’m not nearly “weird,” eccentric, liberal, etc., enough for the cool parts of town.
My friend Allison and I played for 4 days. I had a list of places to see and things to do…and being the awesome friend she is, she dropped everything to come along.
One area I wanted to visit was the Pearl District. I had heard of it, but wasn’t really sure where it was or what there was to do there. This area is full of fun restaurants and great shops. Powell’s book store is there…I could spend hours and hours perusing the shelves (if I didn’t have a baby with me). Instead, I settled for buying some old children’s books. That’s the best part about Powells…old, out-of-print books!
One of my favorite shops in the area is a small print/framing store. They have the coolest Portland prints…I wanted all of them. I love this poster of the Portland neighborhoods. I also loved a series of neon sign paintings by Marla Schroeder-Swade entitled “Northwest Neon Series.”
I was inspired. So, even though I only had my point and shoot with me, I decided to take some photos of the cool signs in downtown Portland. Next summer, when we go back, I’m bringing the big guns!
These will all find a home on my walls. Portland, I love you!
